Thaler – Bradan (obverse), 1725, Dubrovnik.

The Dubrovnik Republic was a maritime trading state with its headquarters in the city of Dubrovnik, which lasted for 700 years from 1358 to 1808. The Dubrovnik Republic had its own currency, and in addition to the thaler, it also minted perpere, solde, škud, poluškud, libertine, artiluke, and the smallest copper coin was the minca.

A thaler is a type of coin weighing 27 grams, minted exclusively from silver and copper. The first thalers were minted at the beginning of the 16th century, and due to their mass, purity of silver, and durability, they became synonymous with reliable and valuable money.

The Bardan is the most famous Dubrovnik thaler with a characteristic depiction of Saint Blaise. These large silver coins were issued between 1725 and 1743 and had a nominal value of one and a half ducats,

From the mid-14th century, the figure of St. Blaise became a symbol of the overall identity of the Dubrovnik Republic.

The iconographic depiction of St. Blaise, who blesses with his right hand and holds the bishop’s staff in his left, is found on almost all Dubrovnik coins.

About the Product

The motif is made of 925 sterling silver, using the forging technique. The silver motif is placed on a base that is framed by a wooden frame with glass. The product is packaged and protected in a suitable decorative box.
