Description of the Motif

The Republic of Dubrovnik was a maritime trading state based in the city of Dubrovnik and its surrounding mainland and islands. It operated from 1358 to 1808, using diplomacy, trade, and its motto “Freedom is not sold for its gold” to maintain its independence from rival powers such as Venice.

After rejecting Venetian rule, the Republic of Dubrovnik reached its golden age in the 15th and 16th centuries. It used highly effective diplomacy and possessed a vast fleet of merchant ships that sailed around the world and established trading posts as far away as Africa.

The republic was one of the first states in Europe to formally outlaw slavery in 1416.

The Republic of Dubrovnik ended its 700-year streak of independence in 1808 when Napoleon annexed it to the French Empire.

The Old Town of Dubrovnik, as an outstanding example of medieval urbanism and architecture, has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.
