The amphitheater in Pula, popularly known as the Arena, is a cultural property of national importance. The name comes from the Latin word harena, meaning sand, which covered the central area of the arena. It was built during the Roman Empire in the 1st century, when Pula was a colonial center of Rome under the name Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola.
