Coat of arms of the city of Zagreb
€92
Description of the Motif
The coat of arms of the City of Zagreb is the official symbol of Zagreb. It is based on the historical seal of the settlement of Gradec from the 13th century, and was officially defined in its current form at the end of the 19th century.
It consists of a blue shield within which there is a series of carefully designed heraldic elements with rich symbolism.
Green hill: Represents Gradec (historical hill Grič) on which the city originally developed.
Silver towers and open gates: The fortress with three towers symbolizes the settlement itself, and the open golden gates represent the city’s hospitality and openness to all well-intentioned travelers and visitors.
Crescent moon and star: The crescent moon and the six-pointed star are traditional Slavic and ancient Croatian symbols of preservation and celestial protection, and are often associated with pre-Christian deities (Lada and Lelja).
Blue background: The blue color of the shield symbolizes nobility, wisdom and glory. It is interesting that the background of the coat of arms was originally red (which is still visible today on the roof of St. Mark’s Church), but the current blue color was officially adopted with the reform of 1896.
