Description of the Motif

The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč is one of the best-preserved monuments of early Byzantine art in the Mediterranean. It was built in the 6th century on the site of an early Christian church, during the reign of Bishop Euphrasius and Emperor Justinian I, and is located in the episcopal complex. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1997.

Construction of the basilica, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, began in 553.

Although the building itself was damaged by earthquakes, wars and fires, authentic floor mosaics from the 5th century have been preserved, which are a representative example of early Christian painting.

The dazzling mosaics that decorate the interior and facade of the church are among the most beautiful preserved works of Byzantine art.
